Both in our professional and personal lives, many of us have experienced that there is something we want to achieve, but we have a hard time doing it. So much so, that sometimes we stop trying. We have all heard the famous "Never give up", that perseverance is a value, that "If you believe it, you will do it", that if you really want it, you will try again and again until you achieve it. Words that, although they are very positive and motivating also, without a proper context and treatment, can become dangerous. If this perseverance turns into stubbornness, if that desire is not properly conceptualized, or if even if we do things a thousand times, the goal is not achieved, then we can fall into a frustration so deep that we may think that we are not smart enough, good enough, shrewd enough, strong enough, or even worse, deserving enough to achieve it.
Biologist Humberto Muratana says, "Effectiveness cannot be confused with truth" and in the world we live in, it seems that if we are not being immediately effective then we are not competent. It is possible that we are not yet competent, it is possible that our approach needs adjustments, what is not acceptable is that we abandon our dreams, our projects or our aspirations because of a self-demand that asks us for everything or nothing.
They say that in every crisis there is an opportunity. I believe there are many, but not all of them are for everyone. According to each person's area of experience and work, for some it has been an opportunity to increase their achievements, for example, those who are dedicated to topics that offer or improve our experience on the Internet, or those who handle medical supplies, for health, or the welfare of people. Also for those who saw in this health crisis the opportunity to start a business either in what I have just mentioned or to expand their horizons, such as sales of mouth covers of many types (and some very creative), masks, items required by the authorities to open their businesses, training related to the subject, etc. But what about the others? For many others, not only have they not found an opportunity, but they have been quite hurt, many have had to close the doors of their businesses/companies for good.
Let's reflect on what do we tell ourselves when we fail, when the results are not what we expected and we feel disappointed or that there are no more options?
What we are experiencing these days can also be an opportunity for those who know that insisting on doing things the same way without results is not the answer, but neither is it the end.
Maybe we need to think about doing things better (innovation) or maybe we need to do things completely new (disruption). But to make the big leap, we need time for reflection and we must: create awareness, design actions, plan and define objectives, as well as manage progress and accountability.
Let's take advantage of this tough stage to, like the diver, give ourselves the moment of stillness that is so necessary before taking the leap.
